Pillow Block Bearings Thailand – Complete Selection & Procurement Guide

Thailand's manufacturing sector is vast. From the automotive assembly lines in Chonburi and Rayong to the food processing plants in Ayutthaya and the packaging operations in Samut Prakan, rotating equipment is everywhere. And rotating equipment runs on bearings.

One of the most popular bearing units throughout Thai industry is the pillow block bearing. They are routinely used by maintenance managers, plant engineers and procurement teams. Very simple to install. The insert bearings are replaceable. Housing materials adapt to various environments. These attributes make pillow block bearings the preferred bearing type for conveyor shaft drives, fan drives, agricultural machinery, and rotating equipment in general in the Eastern Economic Corridor and beyond.

This guide provides all the information you need to help you choose, source, install and maintain the appropriate pillow block bearing for your Thailand application.

What Are Pillow Block Bearings?

A pillow block bearing is a mounted bearing assembly. It contains a bearing insert inside a housing unit designed to support rotating shafts. The housing bolts directly to a flat mounting surface. This makes installation simple compared to loose bearing arrangements that require custom housings.

Key components: The standard pillow block has two main parts. The housing block is the support structure — usually grey iron, stainless steel, or thermoplastic — with two bolt holes in the base. The insert bearing is a rolling element bearing with a spherical outer ring that seats into the housing bore, providing a degree of self-alignment. A locking mechanism — setscrew, eccentric locking collar, or concentric adapter sleeve — grips the shaft and prevents axial movement.

For a comprehensive technical overview of bearing types — covering deep groove ball, angular contact, spherical roller, and tapered roller bearings that power the inserts used in pillow block assemblies — see our Bearings Article covering the full range of industrial bearing technologies and their performance characteristics.

How Pillow Block Bearings Work

A rotating shaft passes through the bore of the insert bearing. The rolling elements — balls or rollers — sit between the inner and outer rings. They reduce friction to a fraction of what sliding contact would produce.

The outer ring's spherical surface seats in the matching concave bore of the housing. This allows the insert to tilt slightly relative to the housing. That tilt accommodates minor shaft-to-housing misalignment without creating edge-loading stresses that would destroy a non-aligning bearing.

The primary functions of a pillow block bearing assembly are:

  • Carrying the weight of the shaft, belt tension, and process loads (radial load support)

  • Positioning the shaft along its axis through the locking mechanism (axial location)

  • Compensating for shaft deflection or housing misalignment (misalignment accommodation)

  • Minimizing energy loss and heat generation (friction reduction)

  • Allowing the bearing element to be changed without disturbing the shaft or replacing the housing (simplified maintenance)

Types of Pillow Block Bearing Units

Standard Two-Bolt Pillow Block (UCP Series)

This is the most common configuration across Thai industry. The two-bolt pillow block — designated in the ISO/JIS UCP series — provides a compact, low-profile mounting. It suits the majority of conveyor, fan, and general machinery applications. Shafts vary in size from 12 mm to 100 mm and larger. High degree of interchangeability between brands, making procurement and replacement stock management simple.

Four-Bolt Flange Units (UCF / UCFC Series)

Flange-type units mount on a vertical or horizontal surface using four bolts. They allow shaft support where a flat base mounting surface is unavailable. Square flanges (UCF) and round flanges (UCFC) are commonly specified on fan drives, pump installations, and equipment where the bearing must mount to a wall or plate rather than a base frame.

Take-Up Units (UCT Series)

Take-up bearing units incorporate a sliding or screw-adjustable frame. The bearing position can be moved along a channel or frame slot. These are widely used on conveyor drive shafts where belt tension must be adjusted periodically. This is a common maintenance requirement on conveyor pillow block bearings Thailand processing facilities manage.]

For Thailand's sugar mills, steel processing, and heavy industrial machinery, plummer block housings accepting full-size spherical roller or cylindrical roller bearings are specified. For the majority of Thai manufacturing, agricultural, and food processing applications, standard pillow block units in the UCP range provide sufficient load capacity at lower cost and with greater interchangeability.

Applications of Pillow Block Bearings in Thailand

Conveyor Systems

The single largest application segment are the manufacturing and logistics operators for conveyor pillow block bearings in Thailand. The head shafts, tail shafts, and return idler shafts of conveyors all need to be supported by reliable bearings that can be easily maintained. The replaceable insert design allows maintenance personnel to replace the bearing without removing the shaft from the conveyor frame. For indoor dry conveyors, standard cast iron UCP units are used. Conveyors that go through washdown zones are fitted with stainless steel or thermoplastic units.

Food Processing and Beverage Production

Food grade pillow block bearings Thailand food and beverage facilities require must withstand regular high-pressure washdown while maintaining hygienic contact surfaces. Stainless steel 316 housings with FDA-compliant grease, sealed bearings meeting IP66 or IP69K protection, and smooth external surfaces that resist bacterial ingress are standard. These specifications apply to Thailand's rice processing facilities, fruit and vegetable packing lines, beverage bottling operations, and export-oriented food manufacturing plants.

Agricultural Equipment

Agricultural pillow block bearings Thailand rice mills, sugarcane harvesters, and irrigation pump drives rely on must handle heavy radial loads, outdoor dust and moisture exposure, vibration from engine drives, and significant shaft misalignment. Self-aligning insert bearings in robust cast iron or thermoplastic housings with effective labyrinth or contact seals are the appropriate specification.

Manufacturing and Packaging

Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor — the industrial corridor spanning Chonburi, Rayong, and adjacent provinces — hosts automotive, electronics, chemical, and general manufacturing facilities. Pillow block bearing units appear across this sector in fan drives, pump mounts, mixer shafts, roller table assemblies, and general-purpose shaft support applications.

Common Bearing Housing Materials

Housing material selection is determined by the operating environment, fluid exposure, load, and cost constraints.

Cast Iron

Grey cast iron remains the dominant housing material across Thai general industry. It provides excellent compressive strength, good vibration damping, and low cost. It is the default specification for indoor manufacturing conveyors, dry process equipment, and general machinery where corrosion is not a primary concern. Cast iron units should be protected with appropriate paint or coating where moisture exposure is intermittent.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel pillow block bearings Thailand food, pharmaceutical and chemical plants specify are made of 304 or 316 stainless steel. Grade 316 offers excellent resistance to chloride, and is the standard for marine, coastal and normal washdown applications. Housings in stainless steel cannot corrode under exposure to high pressure hot water and chemical sanitizers, protecting from contamination to food products.

Thermoplastic

A variety of nylon, polypropylene and engineered polymer housings offer good chemical resistance at moderate expense. They're much lighter than cast iron ones. They are appropriate for wet or slightly corrosive chemical applications, for corrosive materials transported in conveyors, and for applications where the cost of stainless steel is prohibitive.

Ductile Iron

The ductile iron housing is stronger than the grey cast iron. They are used in heavy duty conveyors and high load industrial machinery requiring further structural strength.

How to Select the Right Pillow Block Bearing

  1. Determine shaft diameter. The insert bearing bore must match the shaft exactly. Standard metric sizes from 12 to 100+ mm are widely stocked in Thailand.

  2. Calculate radial load. Include process loads, belt tension, and dead weight of shaft components. Compare to the unit's dynamic load rating (C) and static rating (C0).

  3. Estimate operating speed. Ensure the bearing's speed rating is not exceeded at the application's maximum rpm.

  4. Assess environmental conditions. Indo-outdoor, dry or wet, chemical exposure, food contact, temp range. These drive housing material and sealing specification.

  5. Select housing material. Cast iron for general dry service. Stainless for washdown/food duty. Thermoplastic for chemical/wet environments.

  6. Choose locking method. Setscrew for moderate loads. Eccentric locking collar for vibration-prone applications. Adapter sleeve for heavy-duty or frequent bearing change requirements.

  7. Verify lubrication requirement. Standard grease-filled sealed units suit most Thai applications. High-speed or high-temperature duty may require specific grease selection.

Pro Tip: When in doubt between two bearing sizes, select the larger unit. An oversized bearing running below its rated load has a significantly longer L10 life than an undersized bearing operating near its capacity limit. The cost difference is small compared to the downtime cost of premature failure.

Brands referenced are SKF, NSK, NTN, FAG (Schaeffler), INA (Schaeffler), Timken, FYH, KOYO (JTEKT), Dodge and others. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) promote the development of the industrial supply chain in Thailand.

Counterfeit Bearing Prevention

Critical Warning: Counterfeit bearings have been reported as an issue throughout the industrial supply chain in Southeast Asia, including Thailand. The units are usually very similar in appearance to the originals, but are constructed of lower quality materials, heat treated incorrectly and do not meet the tolerances set by the manufacturer. They break down at random, damage other equipment, and pose hazards.

  • Purchase only through authorized distributor networks

  • Request material and manufacturing traceability certificates

  • Verify packaging, markings, and documentation against manufacturer standards

  • Be sceptical of pricing significantly below market levels

  • For critical applications, consider specifying PMI (positive material identification) of housing materials on delivery

Installation and Maintenance Best Practices

Installation Procedure

  • Clean the shaft. Clean off any rust, burrs and dirt around the shaft mounting area prior to installation of the bearing.

  • Lightly coat the contact surface in the shaft bore with anti-seize compound. This keeps fretting corrosion at bay, and makes it easier to remove in the future.

  • Push the insert bearing onto the shaft. Place in the proper axial position. Do not hammer. If resistance is felt use a sleeve and press.

  • Position the housing. Install housings at either end of the shaft before tightening all bolts. This assures alignment prior to load.

  •  Torque housing bolt to specification. Use a torque wrench. Under-torqued housings slip. Over-torqued housings crack.

  • Secure insert to the shaft. When tightening setscrews or eccentric collar, tighten them to manufacturer's torque specification in opposing pairs to avoid distortion.

  • Lubricate before start-up. If not pre-greased, use the grease specified, adding it through the nipple until grease comes out at the seal lip. Then purge excess.

Lubrication Requirements

  • Most pillow block bearing units are pre-greased for first time use and should be re-greased on a periodic basis. Key considerations:

  • The types of grease that are suitable for use: Lithium complex grease are suitable for most applications in the Thai industrial sector. NSF H1 Registered Food Grade Grease is suitable for use in food processing units.

  • Relubrication interval: refer to manufacturer's tables for information on shaft speed, operating temperature and bearing size. Every 1000-4000 hours, in normal operating conditions.

  • Use grease – add grease until fresh grease is seen at the purge point. One of the most common causes of bearing failure is over greasing, which can cause churning and heat.

  • Heavy duty operation: When the ambient temperature or housing temperature of the equipment is above 80℃, use high-temperature grease.

Maintenance Inspection Schedule

  • Weekly: unusual noise, check housing temperature and look for grease leakage through housing seals.

  • Check setscrew or collar tightness, inspect housing for cracks/damage and relubricate/change according to schedule monthly.

  • Monthly: Check shaft alignment, trending and check seal condition visually.

  • Annually / At overhaul: Remove insert bearing from housing, check inner and outer rings and rolling elements and cage. Check wear of housing bore. Replace if any deterioration is found.

Common Bearing Failures and Solutions

Failure Cause

Symptoms

Root Cause

Prevention / Fix

Inadequate lubrication

Overheating, noise, discolouration

Wrong grease type, missed relubrication

Use correct grease grade, set relubrication schedule

Contamination

Premature pitting, increased noise

Poor sealing, dirty installation

Upgrade seals, clean installation environment

Shaft misalignment

Uneven wear, vibration, noise

Poor alignment during installation

Precision shaft alignment, use self-aligning insert

Overloading

Spalling, rapid deterioration

Underspecified load rating

Correct bearing selection using load calculations

Incorrect installation

Fretting, cage damage, early failure

Forcing, hammering, wrong torque

Use correct tools, follow OEM procedure

Corrosion

Surface pitting, red/brown staining

Wrong housing material for the environment

Specify SS or thermoplastic housing for wet/chemical duty

The biggest error that can be made is to replace the same bearing without knowing the reason it failed. By simply swapping out a failed bearing of the same specification, without examining the underlying cause, another bearing fails in the same service interval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pillow blocks bearings are what?

Rolling element insert bearing mounted in a pre-machined housing unit which is bolted to a flat surface in industrial machinery for shaft support.

What is the difference between pillow block and plummer block bearings?

Pillow block bearings employ standard dimensioned insert bearings in small housings appropriate to light to medium loads and up to around 100 mm shaft diameter. Plummer blocks are larger, heavy duty units which take full size bearings for larger shafts and heavy industrial loads.

Which industries have pillow block bearings in Thailand?

Factories and conveyors, beverage and food processing, rice mills, sugar factories, packaging lines, automotive plants and agricultural machinery.

Can stainless steel pillow block bearings be used in the food processing industry?

Yes. In washdown environments, stainless steel is the standard because it is a material that's resistant to corrosion, and has smooth exterior surfaces that are essential for hygienic design.

What is the main reason for the failure of the pillow block bearings?

Poor or improper lubrication, ingress of contamination, shaft misalignment, overloading, improper installation and corrosion are the most common reasons.

How to prevent buying fake bearings in Thailand?

Buy from authorized retailers, request traceability documents, check packaging and labeling carefully, and be wary of prices that seem too good to be true.

How often should pillow block bearings be lubricated?

Shaft speed and housing temperature and size of the bearings are all factors of relubrication intervals. Normal duration is 1,000-4,000 working hours for most of the industrial use of Thailand.

The Bottom Line

Pillow block bearings are the workhorses of Thai industry. From conveyor lines in Chonburi to food processing plants in Ayutthaya, these mounted bearing units keep equipment running.

The key to reliable operation is straightforward: select the correct housing material for your environment, choose the right insert bearing for your load, maintain proper relubrication schedules, and source from verified supply channels.
